Procedures for Weather Related School Cancellations or Delays
December 2, 2016 - The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for snow in the coming week. This is a good opportunity to review the Mercer Island School District's Emergency School Operations Schedule, which is posted on our website HERE.
We tend to close schools if it is unsafe to operate buses or if school environmental systems are not working. When staff members are unable to travel to work from on or off island, or if weather forecasts are serious enough, we may elect to close schools or open on a delayed schedule.
To receive the most immediate updates on closures or late starts, go to the Flash Alert Newswire website at www.flashalert.net to sign up for email and text alerts, and download the free FlashAlert Messenger app for iPhone or Android devices. This site also posts school emergency information as soon as decisions have been made.
In addition to FlashAlert, emergency information is posted on the school district website at www.mercerislandschools.org, on our Facebook page and Twitter feed, and the district maintains a recorded emergency information line at 206-236-3366.
Radio and TV stations will begin announcing schedule changes at 5:30 AM. Changes are typically announced alphabetically by school district. No announcement typically means no schedule change is planned.
To sign up to receive emergency communications from the City of Mercer Island, visit www.mercergov.org/AlertSystem.
Please continue to listen to weather-related announcements regarding safety over the next few days, be prepared for changes to our normal schedules and travel safely.
