DECA team members qualify for international event

Mercer Island High School DECA sent their team of 92 students, who had qualified in area competition in January, to the state competition on March 1 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.  The team of business and marketing students performed extraordinarily well in a field of highly qualified students from across the state.

DECA is a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) for business and marketing students and provides a venue where they may apply their knowledge in such events as competitive role plays addressing case studies, submitting business plans, and other events or projects.  With an overall chapter membership of 207 students, MIHS is the fifth largest in the state and represents our island community and school with professionalism and keen business and marketing insight.

MIHS had 27 students called to stage for the awards portion of state DECA, with either a recognition in an aspect of their event (the test or role play) or as a placement in the event.

Mercer Island High School DECA co-Advisor, Jennifer McLellan reflected, “We are so thankful to our school and our community that continues to support and believe in these students.  They have worked so hard to prepare for DECA and, at every step along the way, an adult has always been available for them whether as DECA judges, our parent chaperones, our Advisory Committee members, class speakers, local businesses who invite our students to visit, etc.  We are so grateful.”

The following students made it to stage at the awards ceremony. Those that placed are now qualified to attend the International DECA event in Orlando, Fla., at the end of April.
