Matt Sullivan Hired as MISD's New Executive Director, Finance and Operations

Mercer Island, WA, August 1, 2022 – Mercer Island School District Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle is pleased to announce the hiring of Matt Sullivan as the new Executive Director, Finance and Operations. Sullivan replaces Ty Bergstrom who joined the Federal Way School District.

“I am very excited to have Matt join us,” said Rundle. “He will bring sustainability and will help us build a strong financial position. Matt will elevate our finance and operations capabilities and help our district thrive in the years ahead.”

“I am truly excited for the opportunity to join the Mercer Island School District team,” said Sullivan. “I hope my focus on transparency, team building, understanding the "bottom line," and my proactive communication style as it pertains to the “why" as it impacts our educational programs will continue to aid the valuable work being done at MISD.”

Sullivan has spent the last eight years as the Executive Director of Business and Operations for the Vashon Island School District. In this role he supervised and managed all the non-academic operations of the district’s departments which included Finance & Administration, Facilities, and Food Services. His duties in these departments included accounts payable/receivable, accounting, contracting, budgeting, personnel, policies, legal, insurance-risk management, enrollment, hiring, labor negotiations, grants, audits, capital projects and state and federal reporting.   

Prior to Vashon Island, Sullivan was the Finance Officer for the City of Kirkland Fire Department in 2013-14, the Business and Finance Officer for Seattle-King County Public Health in 2011-12, and the Chief Financial Officer of the Washington State Wine Commission from 2007-10.

Sullivan also held the roles of Director of Finance and Administration with Vashon Island Fire & Rescue from 2005-07, City Administrator for the City of Everson, WA, from 2003-04, and a Management and Financial Analyst for the City of University Place, WA, from 2001-03.

Sullivan will start his role with MISD on Tuesday, September 6.
