Julie Newcomer Named Next Principal of Northwood Elementary
Tuesday, May 24, 2022 - The Mercer Island School District is pleased to announce Julie Newcomer has been selected to be the next principal of Northwood Elementary School. Newcomer will succeed Aimee Batliner-Gillette who has been Northwood’s principal since the school opened in the fall of 2016.
Newcomer will attend the Thursday, May 26, School Board Meeting where the Board will consider her appointment and take formal action to have her become the next Northwood principal.
“The Mercer Island School District is a wonderful place to work. There are strong staff, fabulous students, and a supportive parent network,” said Newcomer. “My skills, beliefs, and strengths align with the mission and vision of the district and I am excited to be the next principal at Northwood.”
Newcomer has extensive experience in the Mercer Island School District. She is currently teaching fourth grade at Northwood and doing an administrative internship as she completes a Principal Certification Program at Seattle University. Prior to this year, Newcomer was an Instructional Coach for the District from 2017-2021, kindergarten teacher at Lakeridge (2014-15), West Mercer (2015-16), and Northwood (2016-17) and a third grade teacher at West Mercer (1999-2001). Additionally, she taught first grade at Glenwood Elementary in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the 2001-02 school year, and was a preschool teacher at Aldersgate Preschool in Bellevue, from 2005-2007.
“The hiring committee was impressed by Julie’s passion for creating access to a challenging and engaging learning community for students and families,“ said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle. “Her passion for creating an extraordinary education for the next generation of children attending our schools will be a great addition to our District.”
Newcomer graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Seattle University. Newcomer is a graduate of Mercer Island High School.
