Hello Islander Families:
We are in the thick of testing season. AP testing has taken three weeks out of May and statewide testing an additional week out of May and June. I appreciate everyone’s flexibility with the schedules and our teachers have been adjusting their lessons for students participating in both of these types of examinations. Also, with Spring comes warmer weather and students are getting tired of school. It is a long haul from Spring Break until June 21st and we appreciate everything you are doing to help your student(s) stay focused through the end of the year. To help your student(s) we could use your support with:
Dress Code: From time to time the dress code conversation arises especially in the spring when the weather is better. We let students know about the dress code states in the Student Handbook (page 13) as the following:
Consistent with Administrative Policy 3240, students are expected to conform to reasonable standards of acceptable behavior and are expected to preserve the degree of order necessary for a positive climate for learning. Accordingly, student clothing, including and words and symbols on it, must not disrupt the educational process, create reasonable grounds to believe such disruption may occur, and it cannot be contrary to the educational mission and values of our district. Examples of prohibited dress include:
• Any slogan or insignia on clothing that states or implies intimidation, discrimination, or ridicule based on legally protected status, such as race or gender, is prohibited.
• Any display of words, pictures, or references to profanity, alcohol, tobacco, illegal substances, weapons, guns, or sexual innuendo is prohibited.
• Unreasonably revealing or immodest clothing for the school activity involved.
A few examples of appropriate attire are - Students need to wear attire that covers their bellies, shorts/skirts that cover their backside (which includes not having underwear showing and backs showing). Students need to wear attire that does not have any reference to drug/alcohol/tobacco substance logos.
Student Stress & Anxiety: As we head into the final weeks of school for our students we encourage stress free activities that can help your student(s) get through the end of the school year successfully. At this time of year, we have a more heightened awareness. Our staff continues to look at ways we can help students reduce their own stress. Counseling support is always available for any student who wishes to seek professional assistance to cope.
Last Day of School for Students: Our last day of school (adjustment from inclement weather days) is Friday, June 21st.
Students Returning Next Year: Currently we are in the final stages of completing the Master Schedule for course offerings next year. We still have adjustments in the schedule throughout the summer. Individual student schedules will be available for students to view on Skyward August 21, 2019.
MIHS Offices Closed in July: Every year we close our offices during the month of July. If students have any specific business to take care of they need to make sure to take care of their business in June before they leave school.
