Facility Naming Committee
MISD Facility Naming Committee
This is not a committee formed to change the names of any current buildings, classrooms, or facilities. The purpose of this committee is to recommend a policy to the current MISD School Board for them to consider adopting. Depending on the nature of the policy, a future committee could be established for the purpose of naming a specific building, classroom, or facility, but that is not the work of this current group.
The committee is intentionally composed of a diverse group of interested individuals representing the past and present- alumni, former staff, previous and current board members, staff, students, administrators. The hope is that the many perspectives will yield a product to assist school boards when contemplating future naming decisions.
The first in person meeting of the MISD Facility Naming Committee was held on Tuesday, December 3 in the MIHS Library. About 15 Committee members attended representing various parts of the community including:
- Fred Rundle – MISD Superintendent
- Dan Glowitz and Maggie Tai Tucker – current School Board members
- Chick Hodge – former School Board member
- Several current coaches including Gavin Cree and Carla Barokas
- A few District administrators
- Terry Moreman – MI Historical Society
- Two MIHS students
- Several MIHS alumni
- A few MIHS parents
The meeting was super positive and since this was about drafting a policy around naming, the moderated discussion was around factors that the Committee should consider. Names of potential candidates did come up but only as illustrative examples around a factor to consider. There was no discussion about any worthy named candidates.
At the end of the meeting, four committee members volunteered to use the month of December to draft a policy that could be brought back to the group at the meeting in January. The policy drafting committee includes Dan Glowitz, Mindi Wilson (MISD), Kimberley Frank (MIHS parent) and Frank Schott (alumni).
