Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle
Dr. Fred Rundle started as the District’s superintendent on July 1, 2022.
Dr. Rundle has worked in Mercer Island School District for 14 years. He began his career as an elementary school teacher in California and Colorado, also teaching high school social studies and later serving as an elementary school principal in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. In 2009, he was hired as the principal of Mercer Island’s Lakeridge Elementary School, a post he held for four years. He then served as director of learning services for MISD from 2013 to 2015, at which point he was promoted to assistant superintendent. He was named deputy superintendent in July 2021. Dr. Rundle has also served as interim superintendent of MISD in 2016 and as acting superintendent in spring of 2021 during an extended leave by the superintendent.
Dr. Rundle earned a BA in History in 1999 from University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and his multiple subjects teaching credential in 2000 from University of Redlands in Redlands, California. He earned an MA in Administrative Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Colorado at Denver in 2003; his pre-doctoral superintendent licensing from Seattle University in 2013; and his doctorate in educational leadership, also from Seattle University, in 2018. For three and half years, he also served as an adjunct faculty member in the Principal Leadership Program at the Seattle University College of Education.
Dr. Rundle and his family – wife Dana and three children Kallen, Mara, and Davin – live in Issaquah, where they have resided since moving from Colorado in 2009. While Issaquah is their home, Dr. Rundle is quick to remind people that he feels every bit as connected and a part of Mercer Island as Issaquah.
“I’m humbled by the decision of the board and thrilled to continue leading the district and serving the students, staff, families, and greater community,” said Rundle. “The many relationships and partnerships with the people inside and outside of the school district have kept me here for 13 years and were a significant part of my decision to pursue this opportunity. While I have many people to thank, I want to extend my appreciation to former Superintendents Dr. Gary Plano and Donna Colosky for their guidance and support.”
