Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship

Today’s students must be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological landscape. As such, the Mercer Island School District believes in the importance of empowering students to engage with digital content and platforms to meet learning goals. Digital Citizenship education is a priority and teachers are working within their schools to ensure students learn the importance of digital citizenship expectations and responsibilities that come with the use of the internet and technology.

Digital citizens recognize and value the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they engage in safe, legal and ethical behavior (adapted from ISTE 2016 Student Standards).

Digital Literacy Goals:

  • Students cultivate and manage their digital identity and reputation and are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world.
  • Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices.
  • Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.
  • Students manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security and are aware of data-collection technology used to track their navigation online.
