MIHS Math Instructional Resource Adoption Committee
The Mercer Island School District is engaged in a process to select and adopt new teaching and learning resources (curriculum) for our Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry math courses. Go to the MIHS Math Instructional Resource Adoption Committee page.
Math Proficiency Exams
If your student is interested in taking a math proficiency exam to demonstrate mastery of content in an effort to "skip" a middle school math course, please complete the nomination form below.
These assessments are open to current 5th-7th grade students.
Students may not "skip" algebra as it is a high school graduation requirement.
Testing will occur at our four elementary schools and Islander Middle School on May 27, 2026.
Current 6th & 7th graders will test at IMS.
Current 5th graders will test at their respective elementary schools.
Additional details will be provided via email by May 15, 2026 to those who nominate their student(s).

Nominations for testing will be open from April 1st through May 8th 2026.
We do not provide study materials for the assessment.
What is covered on the tests?
Students wishing to accelerate into Math II/III will take the Math 1 Proficiency Assessment. Students will need to demonstrate proficiency at 6th Grade Math Standards.
Students wishing to accelerate into Algebra will take the Math II/III Proficiency Assessment. Students will need to demonstrate proficiency at the 7th AND 8th Grade Math Standards.
Where can I find out what the standards are?
Grade Level Math Standards can be found on the website for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
They can also be viewed directly through the Common Core Math Standards site.
