MISD Inclusive Preschool Program

Inclusive Preschool Students

The Mercer Island School District Early Childhood Special Education Program consists of a continuum of services based on the needs of each preschool age child in Mercer Island who qualifies for Special Education services.  Students who participate in the program are between the ages of 3 to 5 years old.  All students are supported in their least restrictive environment, which might be in a community preschool, the MISD preschool at Northwood Elementary, or itinerant services with a specialist such as:  Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Teacher of the Visually Impaired, or Audiologist. The IEP team will determine the least restrictive environment for each student and what services and supports the child needs to participate in preschool with peers.

Some students may have needs that are best supported with a smaller class size at the MISD preschool at Northwood Elementary. This preschool class is taught by a Washington state certified teacher and a highly qualified group of educators who specialize in early childhood development and education. The curriculum is a comprehensive, research-based curriculum that features inquiry, exploration, and discovery as the foundation of all learning. Typically developing peers are included in the class as peer mentors.
