Communications

Overview

It is the goal of the MISD Communications Department to ensure families, staff, community members and partners, and local media receive accurate and timely information that celebrates our students, staff, groups, programs and the community.

To that end, our Communications Department connects with the Mercer Island School District community in the ways listed below.

Digital Communications

The district website is the home base for all school and district information and the centerpiece of our communication network. We are focused on providing our community with current and relevant information through a tool which is easy to navigate and intuitive.

Email, Text Messaging, Phone Calls

The district utilizes a tool called SchoolMessenger to contact families via email, text message, and phone calls with important reminders, urgent information, and updates from schools, the district, and Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle. The SchoolMessenger system sends messages to the email addresses and cell phones numbers that families have inputted into Qmlativ/Skyward, our Student Information System (SIS).

At any time families can update their email addresses and phone numbers in Qmlativ/Skyward if they have changed to ensure they will receive emails and text messages. There is as two-step process to confirm you will receive text messages from the district. This process includes verifying your preferred cell phone number is correct in the “Text Contacts” tab on the “Skylert Information” page. We have full instructions on our School Closures page on the two-step process to confirm cell phone number and email addresses.

Community members can sign up to subscribe to emails from MISD to get the latest news on our schools, district, Long Range Facility Plan, and message from Superintendent Rundle.

Social Media

We want to use social media to celebrate our students, staff, and community. We know families use social media regularly and we have to have a presence on platforms.  We encourage our community to connect with MISD on our Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, and YouTube.

Media

We work closely with the Mercer Island Reporter, Seattle Times, and local TV stations to highlight student achievements and successes and feature our awesome teachers and staff. We share all media stories on our social media platforms. Media interested in a story on a student, staff member, school group, or school or district program should contact our Communications Department at communications@mercerislandschools.org.

Print Communications

Each year we send an Annual Report to every mailbox on Mercer Island. This report highlights student successes in the last year and gives an update on the economic health of MISD. Each year we also produce School Profile documents, which includes the school’s annual School Improvement Plan (SIP), that is posted on school websites and made available to community groups, families, and staff. Copies of these publications can be found on our Publications page.

Communications Plan

MISD has produced a Communications Plan annually for the last two years. The purpose of the Communications Plan is to present our roadmap for communicating within our school district community. The annual plan addresses two main types of audiences: internal (students, staff, administration and Board of Education), and external (parents, guardians, businesses, civic groups, religious groups, and other members of the MISD community.)

Our Communications Plan is essential for our community to ensure we have one voice as a source of information for the public. The goal of clearly and effectively communicating with our families and community—centered on the Board of Education values, vision, and mission— while we continue to build confidence in the district is the priority.
