School Bus Safety
Motorists are urged to exercise caution and follow state laws when approaching a school bus or school crossing.
Tips for Motorists:
- Be alert and slow down when driving in neighborhoods with school zones.
- Watch for children walking, playing, or assembling near bus stops.
- Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
What do the flashing lights on school buses mean?
- Flashing yellow lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
- Flashing red lights indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again. On Mercer Island, selected school buses are equipped with cameras that capture stop-arm violations. Violators are subject to a $430 fine.

Tips for Students:
- Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
- Wait 10 feet away from where the bus will stop.
- Only approach the bus after the bus comes to a complete stop and the doors open.
- If crossing the street, wait for the driver to signal.
- Only cross in front of the bus.
- When exiting the bus move directly away from the side of the bus. (Do not walk alongside.)
- Make eye contact with the driver to make sure that they can see you.
- If you drop something near a school bus, tell the driver right away. Do not try to pick up the item because the driver may not be able to see you.
- Inside the bus, stay seated while the bus is moving.
