Three MISD Schools Recognized by King County Green Schools Program

Mercer Island, WA, June 5, 2024 – Lakeridge Elementary, Northwood Elementary, and Mercer Island High School have been recognized by the King County Green Schools Program for sustaining Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Green School practices during the 2023-24 school year.
All three schools and their student led Green Teams were recognized by the King County Green Schools Program as they have taken valuable steps to reduce waste and increase the sustainability of their school community.
Schools achieve Level 1 status for their waste and recycling practices and achieve Level 2 status for maintaining Level 1 and adding energy conservation practices. To achieve a Level 3 Green School rating each school must sustain Level 1 and Level 2 status and add water conservation practices.
The mission of the Green School Program is to provide King County school districts, schools, and student teams with tools and support needed to:
- Begin and expand waste reduction and recycling practices and other conservation actions.
- Involve the whole school community in environmental stewardship with attention to cultural differences, equity, and best practices for engagement.
- Operate efficient and environmentally responsible facilities.

Three years ago, Mercer Island School District implemented two new curricula across Mercer Island elementary schools. After the implementation, students’ standardized test scores have improved significantly.
