Dear Mercer Island Community,

We are so grateful to the Mercer Island community for voting “Yes” on our Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) replacement levy that was on the February 10 Special Election ballot. Your votes were a statement about the belief in our students, support of our educators, and confidence in our schools and district.

Four years ago when we last took the EP&O replacement levy to the community, it passed with an approval rate of 73.66%. Last night, the first release of results showed the yes votes at 73.06%. Amidst all of the challenges and uncertainties facing our community, we are humbled by the consistent support. We do not take this for granted and will continue working as hard as ever to maintain the tradition of educational excellence.

Washington State continues to fall short of its promise to fully-fund education, but that is not the case on Mercer Island. Your support conveys the value this community places on education and its willingness to exercise its ability, to the extent possible, to invest in its schools.

The EP&O levy makes up 16% of the MISD budget and helps fund programs and opportunities that would otherwise be eliminated. Fiscal responsibility and prudent management of the district’s resources will continue to use a formula built on state and federal funding, local levies, and community support through the PTAs, Mercer Island Schools Foundation, and boosters.

Thank you for your continued partnership.
