Support MISD Students Battling Cancer on Monday By Wearing Gold

Dear Mercer Island Community,

The month of September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Childhood cancer hits close to home on Mercer Island as some of our students are currently battling this life-altering disease.

Northwood student Emerson Vivion is one student in our district battling cancer. He was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2023 at 8-years old.

Whether or not you personally know Emerson or a different student in MISD with cancer, this month offers an important opportunity to unite in support of all children and families affected by childhood cancer.

We are asking all students, staff, and community members to wear gold or yellow, the official colors representing childhood cancer awareness, on Monday, September 30.

Cancer not only affects physical health but also social and emotional well-being. By Going Gold, we stand with Emerson and every student in our community affected by this disease.

In 1997, a group of parents chose the gold ribbon to symbolize the resilience and strength of childhood cancer warriors and heroes. By wearing gold, we can help raise awareness and remind others of the ongoing need for research, support, and compassion for families facing this fight.

Let’s show our support on Monday, September 30 by wearing gold and helping to raise awareness. Together, we can make a difference!
