Mercer Island School District Board policy requires the Superintendent to make a recommendation no later than April 15 annually if the district will be open to new nonresident student enrollment for the next school year. More information on residency requirements for enrollment in MISD can be found on our website.

The School Board and Rundle have been discussing open enrollment at recent Board meetings as they work towards a decision.

Superintendent Rundle will bring a recommendation to the Board at the Thursday, March 28 Regular Meeting that the district open to nonresident enrollment for grades 8-12 in the 2024-25 school year with a goal of 80 to 100 students. He will also bring a recommendation to the Board at this meeting to have open enrollment for the children of eligible MIHS Athletics Coaches, MISD Substitute Educators, MIHS Club Advisors, and expanding eligibility for part time MISD staff.

The Board’s next regular meeting is Thursday, March 28 at 5pm where the Superintendent’s recommendation on open enrollment will be discussed.  Community members can provide Public Input on open enrollment at this meeting.

At the March 28 meeting the Superintendent will have followed Board Policy to provide an open enrollment recommendation to the Board by April 15. The Board could take a vote on open enrollment at the March 28 meeting. If no vote is taken at the March 28 meeting, the Board’s next regular meeting is Thursday, April 18, where a vote could be taken on open enrollment. The Board is not required to take action one way or the other on the Superintendent’s recommendation, he just must have made one by April 15.
