Mercer Island, WA, April 26, 2023 - The MIHS DECA team just returned from the International DECA competition held in Orlando, Florida.

This event is the culmination of a year of competition where 22,000 qualifying DECA students from around the world competed in events that included research papers, start-up business projects, and case studies involving extemporaneous ‘pitch’ skills in front of teams of judges.

The MIHS team represented Mercer Island by bringing their ‘A’ game to these challenging events by exhibiting poise, determination, grit, creativity, and sheer hard work.  There were 253 MIHS DECA students that began the year with the Area 3 DECA competition in January.  Five MIHS students made it onto the stage as finalists in Orlando out of the 22,000 students that competed.

  • Damon Marcou was a finalist with his International Business Plan
  • Jessica Xing was a finalist in her Role Play 1 for Business Services Marketing
  • Elisabeth Grove was a finalist as a top exam score for Food Marketing Series
  • Keegan Wang was a finalist in his Role Play 1 for Food Marketing Series
  • Kathy Shao was a finalist in both her Role Play 1 and 2 for Marketing Communication Series

Co-Advisor Jennifer McLellan, when asked to comment, said, “Thank you to all the parents, Mercer Island judges, mentors, MIHS administration, faculty, and our entire community who believe in these students and support them as they flex their developing business skills.  We are so grateful.”
