If a student has not already been allocated a parking spot, what can the student do?
All available parking has been assigned. We realize the challenges that our limited parking presents. We are working with our student leadership to encourage safe carpooling or taking the school bus. Therefore, ticketing of cars in non-assigned parking spots has been delayed but will begin the week of September 20th.

If a student needs a schedule change, how does the student proceed?
The development of our master schedule is built every spring based upon student course selection. With a maximum allowed capacity per class this year of thirty-three students, it is challenging to make course changes at this point. For any schedule corrections, please refer to the Counseling Center Department website. The most updated information on how to request a schedule change will be posted there.

If a student needs academic support beyond the class period, what is available?
It is normal and typical for a student to struggle to understand a new concept on occasion. It is also normal for students to have subjects about which their aptitude makes them more challenging than others. For those occasions, we currently offer:
- Student assistance during office hours before or after school. While each teacher may have a different time based upon their class schedules, teachers will work to coordinate students’ needs with their available times.
- PTSA tutoring beyond the school day*. This is typically after school, and we are in the process of scheduling those times and teachers to provide this more extensive tutoring.
* At this point, we are not providing formal tutoring during student “off” periods. After we ascertain student needs for tutoring beyond what’s currently offered through the PTA, we may proceed with further offerings.

If a student is having a tough time emotionally, what should the student or parent do?
COVID has impacted us all in different ways. As always, we are working together to support the mental health of our students. It is acceptable and normal to struggle at times. It is particularly understandable to need support in these times. For mental health support, please contact Chris Harnish or Caleb Visser, MIYFS Counselors, for a free confidential consultation. They can be reached via their MIHS school email at chris.harnish@mercerislandschools.org and caleb.visser@mercerislandschools.org.
Parents are also invited to attend a parent workshop sponsored by Parent Edge and MIYFS. The topic for this workshop is school reentry tips, which is scheduled for September 27th at 7:00 pm.
