• 2018/2019 School Year HERE WE COME!

    DEAR FIRST GRADE FAMILIES,

Hi! My name is Ms. Flaherty. I will be your first grade teacher this year at West Mercer Elementary School. I LOVE 1st Grade! I am so excited that you will be in my class this year! I can't wait to meet you and start our year together. I know you are going to love first grade and enjoy all the exciting things we do in here.  I moved classrooms and I’m thrilled to be in Pod A, Room 3. All first grade classrooms will be in the same Pod. Yay!

    ABOUT ME

I grew up in Minnesota and Texas and I’m a master at both accents. I moved to the Seattle area when I started college.  I love the Pacific Northwest and can’t imagine being anywhere else. This summer I was able to spend a lot of time with family and friends doing a lot of very fun tourist like activities.  My favorite was revisiting the Ballard Locks and taking several boat tours. This was the summer of weddings for me as well. I actually went to 2 weddings of former West Mercer students who were in my 2nd grade and 3rd grade classrooms many years ago.  I can’t wait to hear about your summer fun festivities.

    OUR CLASSROOM

Our classroom is a very busy and FUN place to learn. Our classroom environment is structured by a variety of hands-on learning activities, games, music, media, and learning centers. I love having parent volunteers in the classroom! You will hear lots more about this in detail at Curriculum Night and you can ask me any questions at the Open House.

    COMMUNICATION

Communication is essential and I will be sending home a weekly newsletter about what we are doing in school. I also post a lot of videos, photos, and information on Seesaw. Please feel free to contact me by email kelly.flaherty@mercerislandschools, or call me at the school, 206 230-5056. I welcome your thoughts and am looking forward to working together to make 1st Grade a super fun and successful year! I can’t wait to meet you all at the Open House on September 4 from 3-4 p.m. We will have a classroom treasure hunt with a treat at the end. So come be a busy bee in Room 3. I’m just so excited.

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Flaherty
