What is your job description?   Officially, Technology Specialist.  Unofficially?  Technology Whisperer.  Translator of "Geek Speak" to English.  Decorated Hunter of Lost iPads.  IT Voodoo Practitioner.  Business Center Co-Pilot.

How long have you been teaching, or been working in education?  3 years, combined.  2 1/2 years in my family's little hometown of Elma, Washington.

How long have you been at IMS? Where did you work previously before coming to IMS?  I've been with the district since June of last school year, and arrived just in time to assist with the end-of-year iPad collection process.  Worked through the Summer at multiple buildings, which isn't typical for the position, but was invaluable in becoming familiar with with all of the behind-the-scenes technology work that gets the Mercer Island School District ready to go every school year.

Prior to working here, I spent 1 1/2 years with The Seattle Times providing night shift newsroom and production support.  There are some really wonderful people behind bringing that newspaper to life every day and it was an amazing experience being able to work with them.

What is your favorite thing about working at IMS? What keeps you coming back?  These kids make me laugh all the time.  The environment is just different from anything you'd find in the corporate IT world.  There's a very different personal reward to working for a school as well, knowing that every staff computer or technical issue that I address isn't impacting a single person, it's impacting the educational experience of 150-180 kids.  The work I do isn't improving a financial bottom line that can be measured on a spreadsheet somewhere, it's helping an educator do their job, which in turn, is assisting in the building and growth of a community through the education of our future generations.  I don't know if I could do what they do every day, but I'm proud to be here to help carry out and execute such an important mission.

What are you most proud of this year in regards to your work at IMS?  I'm not sure if I'm proud of my achievements this year as much as I feel a general sense of relief. I'm thankful that I've been adaptive enough to evolve from an almost exclusively PC\Windows background to an environment at IMS that is entirely based in Apple technology, and in the midst of that transition, be able to help the staff and students every day at the level that they require. I can't express how fortunate I've been to have Keith Wildermuth around, my Technology Specialist Co-Pilot here in the Business Center. His extensive background in Apple technology and willingness to 'hold my hand' at times has really been invaluable in the transition and growth of the skills I've needed to be a successful asset for IMS and the Mercer Island School District as a whole.

What is your favorite food?  I'm fortunate enough to have an Austrian in my life who is skilled in the art of making pork and chicken schnitzel.  For people who don't know what that is, it's what I can best describe as the grandfather of chicken fried steak, just not as a breakfast food with gravy on the top or beef on the inside.  The most authentic schnitzel we've encountered is at a restaurant in a basement in Leavenworth called Andreas Keller.

What is your favorite movie?  The original Ghostbusters.  Hands down.

What is your favorite book?  The wisdom and vocabulary of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip series shaped who I am today.

What is your favorite quote?  “A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing.”

    ― Oscar Wilde

What is your favorite treat?  Chocolate Peanut Butter M&M's.

Anything else you want to share?  The best thing I've ever done for myself was giving up everything that didn't fit in two suitcases and a backpack.  That's the requirement for moving to another country for a year.  Living in Australia changed me at my core.  Learning "No worries" is learning not to be afraid of the world around you.  As most people are fully aware, Australians are surrounded by some of the the Earth's deadliest wildlife.  They live knowing that a lethal spider showing up in your shoe or bed just happens sometimes, or that in walking down the sidewalk or along a beach path a poisonous snake may cross your path, or that you could take a swim in one of the 1000's of beautiful beaches there and lose your life to a box jellyfish, step on a rockfish, or encounter a shark....  But if you spent all your time afraid of these things, you'd never live, you'd never enjoy the beauty of living on an island paradise.  Australians place an incredible value on life for these very reasons.  "No worries" is notoriously used as a passing remark to respond as "I've got this under control," "no problem," or "don't sweat it," but the statement is much more than that.  At it's core, it's the culturally ingrained recognition you won't have any say in how or when your time has come, and that's it's so important to live life to the fullest, unafraid. Anything less is an unimaginable tragedy.  If there was any lesson I have learned over the course of my life worth broadcasting, it's this one.
