New Teacher & Mentor Resources

  • New Certificated Staff Mentoring Program

Every new certificated staff member in the Mercer Island School District receives a mentor for their first year. The district staff work with the administrators to select staff who will provide support in curriculum, instruction, and the day-to-day operation of the school. As much as possible new certificated staff are matched with mentors in their school and grade/department. The expectations for new certificated staff and mentors working together are found here: Mentor Responsibilities

All new certificated staff members will be enrolled into a clock hours course titled "New Certificated Staff Orientation". As a part of this course, new certificated staff will meet with mentors, discuss relevant issues with colleagues, reflect upon observations made by their mentors and discuss journal articles.

This website is designed to provide new certificated staff and their mentors with information and resources to support the critical first years of work in the District.

Information about state certification and re-certification can be found on OSPI's website at

Information about National Board Teacher Certification can be found at the state website and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website
