Volunteer In Our Schools
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Mercer Island School District. Volunteers provide a valuable service to our schools and the District appreciates the time, talent, commitment, and energy given by all volunteers.
All volunteers are required to go through a volunteer training process. This process includes:
Step 1: Review the Volunteer Materials
Please begin by reviewing the linked volunteer materials to understand the requirements and expectations for volunteering in our schools.
Step 2: Complete the Forms
If you are unable to print the volunteer forms, please contact the front office at the school/location where you would like to volunteer.
Volunteer Confidentiality Agreement
If you are unable to print these forms, please contact the front office at the school where you would like to volunteer.
Step 3: Washington State Patrol (WSP) Background Check
ALL volunteers must complete a Washington State Patrol (WSP) background check before working with students.
Step 4: Determine if Fingerprinting is Required
Some volunteer roles also require an FBI background check, which is completed through fingerprinting. Examples include:
-
Certain Field trip chaperones if overnight trips or if volunteer will have unsupervised access to students
-
Volunteer athletic coaches
-
Club advisors
If you are not sure whether this applies to you, please confirm with the staff member coordinating your volunteer service.
Step 5: Fingerprinting Process
If fingerprinting is required, you will need to:
- Schedule a fingerprinting appointment
- Pay the $25 fee.
- Visit the District’s Maintenance and Operations building (4140 86th Avenue SE, Mercer Island, WA 98040). Please note: fingerprinting is not available at the District Administrative Office.
In addition, certain volunteer roles also require an FBI background check, which is completed through fingerprinting. Examples include field trip chaperones, volunteer athletic coaches, and club advisors. If you are unsure whether this applies to your role, please confirm with the staff member coordinating your volunteer service.
Step 6: Field Trip Volunteers
If you are volunteering only as a Field Trip Chaperone, please visit our Field Trip - Volunteer Chaperone page.
Note: Each year, volunteers need to complete each of the above only once. Fingerprints are valid for 2 years but you must complete a WSP Background check annually.
We look forward to working with you. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with our students.
