Boundary Committee

  • In the 2014-2015 school year, the Superintendent established a boundary committee, facilitated by Richard Withycombe, to recommend new elementary boundaries, given that the new elementary school, Northwood, would open on the North Mercer campus in the fall of 2016. These new elementary school boundaries for the four (4) elementary schools determined school placements for students beginning with the 2016-17 school year. District programs are determined by the Superintendent and instructional team in a north/south configuration.

The new boundaries were recommended by the Boundary Committee to the Superintendent at the end of Feb. 2015 and presented to the public at the Dec. 10, 2014, public preview and Feb. 4, 2015, public hearing at Islander Middle School.
The following board-adopted 'values' guided the committee's work:
    1. Develop new K-5 boundaries that balance enrollments across all four schools
    2. Identify boundary markers that provide for safe and secure walking and bicycling zones
    3. Establish boundaries that will be relatively stable in the foreseeable future
    4. Maximize walking and bicycling zones to reduce the number of students requiring district transportation
    5. Optimize transportation efficiency and cost savings in busing zones
    6. Impact on the smallest number of families
    7. Provide families with the option to delay moving their children to their new neighborhood school for one year and suggest ways the district can support the transition of families and children affected by boundary changes
If you have questions about the new boundaries, please send an email to Executive Director of Finance, Ty Bergstrom
