The agenda for this Board meeting includes Board Policy 1005: Selection of Legislative Representative, two items on the Partial Governance Process Monitoring agenda, and recognition of outgoing senior Student Representative to the Board Ava Zhang and district Wellness Coordinator Stephanie Boyer.

1. Board Policy 1005: Board Officer and Board Member Duties - Reorganization of the Board - Selection of Legislative Representative

At the first meeting in June, or at a meeting before the end of the academic year, the Board will elect from among its members a legislative representative to serve a two-year term. The annual election of a legislative representative will result in two Board members serving as legislative representatives concurrently, which creates continuity in service of the Board’s legislative interests and advocacy. If a Board member is unable to continue to serve as a legislative representative, a replacement may be elected at the next regularly scheduled meeting.

For the June 2024 nomination, the Board selected just one legislative representative to serve until June 2026. The legislative representative nominated and confirmed at the December 2023 meeting will continue to serve until June 2025 at which time the Board will select a member to serve until June 2027.

Consistent with the way the Board elects its president and vice president, the legislative representatives will be selected per the following process:

  • A. Call for nominations for legislative representative to serve during the ensuing year; those nominations made by a seconded motion will be considered for election; and
  • B. Election of a legislative representative (roll call vote).

Board Discussion, Action, and/or Recommendations

The Board discussed the legislative representative position and its roles and responsibilities. Director Lee nominated Director Martinez for the Senior Legislative Representative role and Director Lurie seconded the nomination. The Board voted 4-0 with one abstention (Yes: Lurie, Martinez, Lee, Tucker; Abstain: Glowitz) for Director Martinez to be the Senior Legislative Representative. The Student Representatives voted 2-0 for Director Martinez.
