Mercer Island, WA, February 13, 2026 – The Mercer Island School District School Board held a Regular Meeting on Thursday, February 12 at the District's Administration Building.

The Board meeting started at 5pm in the District Administration Building with Board Announcements, Inquiries, and Reports.

Board Announcements, Inquiries, and Reports

Director Lee – Director Lee spoke about going to the MIYFS fundraising breakfast, attending the February PTA Council meeting, and attending the Mary Wayte Pool Renovation Celebration. She also spoke about attending the Linkage Session with the Mercer Island Schools Foundation (MISF) and the Mercer Island City Council.  

Director Bradley – Director Bradley spoke about attending the MIHS boys and girls basketball teams senior nights and the Mary Wayte Pool Renovation Celebration. He spoke about a productive Linkage Session with MISF and the City Council. He attended the most recent Facilities Naming Committee meeting and said a recommendation will be brought to the Board at the March 12 Board meeting. He recognized the importance of the MIYFS breakfast and what MIYFS staff does to support students. Bradley reaffirmed the District’s support for student safety after the publication Thursday of a story by InvestigateWest headlined “Washington Teacher Sexual Misconduct Cases Shielded From Public” and highlighted the importance of working the community partners to facilitate student safety through legislative action. Bradley expressed his gratitude to the community for passing the EP&O levy.

Director Tucker – Director Tucker thanked the community for passing the EP&O levy. She spoke about attending the Northwood Parent Advisory Council meeting on Thursday.

Director Burnett – Director Burnett thanked the community for passing the EP&O levy. She said the Linkage Session with the Mercer Island City Council last week was great. Burnett attended the MIYFS Foundation breakfast on Wednesday. She has been busy with the professional boundaries subcommittee on the Student Safety & Well-Being committee getting into how they will develop recommendations.

1. Board Policy 1800 OE-6: Budgeting/Financial Planning - Preliminary 2026-2027 Enrollment Estimate

The Board heard from Superintendent Rundle on preliminary enrollment projections for the 2026-27 school year.

Board Discussion, Action, and/or Recommendations

Members of the District finance team presented information to the Board asked staff questions about enrollment projections. The Board also discussed demographic reports the District has conducted and future demographic surveys the board might conduct. No action was taken by the Board.

After the Partial Governance Process Monitoring Agenda the Board took up two items on the Full Governance Process Monitoring agenda.

2. Board Policy 1002: Governing Style (L-1)

The Board conducted its annual monitoring of Board Policy 1002, Governing Style.

The Board voted 4-0 and the Student Representatives voted 2-0 the Board was in compliance with Board Policy 1002.

3. Board Policy 1003: Board Job Description (L-1)

The Board conducted its annual monitoring of Board Policy 1003, Board Job Description.

The Board voted 4-0 and the Student Representatives voted 2-0 the Board was in compliance with Board Policy 1003.

After the Full Governance Process Monitoring agenda the meeting transitioned to Recognitions, Student Representatives Report, and Public Input.

Recognition

Superintendent Rundle had remarks recognizing American Heart Month, Black History Month, President’s Day, Lunar New Year, Career and Technical Education Month, Ramadan, Ash Wednesday, and Rare Disease Day. He spoke about attending the Black Student Union dinner at MIHS on Wednesday.

Student Representatives Report

Student Representatives to the Board Lucy Dorer and Brody newcomer spoke about the Superintendent Student Advisory and how it is working to identify what students could achieve if they felt fully supported by a community truly committed to their success. They also highlighted for the Board what students in the district have been up to since the last Board Meeting on January 29. Lucy thanked the Mercer Island community for passing the EP&O levy.

Public Input

The last three items on the agenda for the meeting were the Consent Agenda, Superintendent Report & Announcements, and the Legislative Report.

Consent Agenda – The Consent Agenda was passed 4-0 by the Board and 2-0 by the Student Representatives.

Superintendent Report Superintendent Rundle gave a short update on the budget webinar he and Assistant Superintendent Matt Sullivan recorded which will be sent the community on Friday. Rundle highlighted the declining birthrate across Washington since 2016 and what that means for enrollment statewide. He also spoke about other aspects of the webinar that will be presented to the community.

Rundle expressed his appreciation to the Board and the Citizens for Mercer Island Public Schools (CMIPS) for the work done by both on the EP&O levy. He also thanked Merce Island voters for passing the EP&O levy.

Legislative Report – Director Cristina Martinez joined the meeting on Google Meet for this part of the meeting. Director Bradley provided a update to the Board and the community that he and Martinez wrote on the status of education bills before the legislature.

After the Legislative Report the Board recessed at 6:20pm to conduct an Executive Session to discuss litigation or potential litigation pursuant to RCW 42.30.110(1)(i) and to review the performance of a public employee pursuant to RCW 42.30.110(1)(g). The Executive Session was closed to the public.

The Board returned from the Executive Session at 7:18pm and adjourned the regular meeting at 7:19pm.
