The Mercer Island School District is pleased to present its 11th annual Pathfinder Award to 1983 MIHS graduate Mary Wayte whose achievements, strength of character, and citizenship inspire and challenge today’s youth to make significant contributions to humankind.

The announcement was made at the School Board meeting this evening and Mary spoke to the Board about being named the Pathfinder Award recipient.

Mary was a professional swimmer from 1981 to 1988 and competed in major swimming events including the Pan Am Games, two Olympics, the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, and the World Aquatic Championships.

Mary got her start in swimming on Mercer Island, in the pool that now bears her name, and grew up on an island with committed schools and residents and she embraced the larger world around her and pushed the boundaries of her potential through competitive swimming.

“Mary Wayte exemplifies the spirit of the Pathfinder Award through her extraordinary achievements, leadership, and commitment to excellence,” said Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle. “As a Mercer Island High School graduate, she embraced the strong foundation of our schools and community while pursuing opportunities that inspired others on a global stage. Her accomplishments reflect the creativity, determination, and vision that define our Pathfinder recipients. Mary’s legacy reminds our students that with curiosity, courage, and purpose, they too can make a meaningful impact on the world around them.”

Mary is four-time Olympic medalist in swimming. She won two gold medals at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, one for winning the 200-meter freestyle and one as a member of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay team.

At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea Mary won a silver medal with Team USA in the 4x100-meter medley relay when she swam the freestyle leg. She then won a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

After graduation from MIHS in 1983 Mary attended the University of Florida on an athletic scholarship. She won eight NCAA Championships, including winning the 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays for three consecutive years. She received 26 All-America honors in her for years at Florida.

Mary was nominated by Brandy Fox who said “She is an island treasure with a talent for connecting with students, parents, and the community. She deserves the committee's consideration for recognition as a Pathfinder who proudly represents Mercer Island to the world.”

MIHS is holding their Fall Athletics Code of Conduct meeting on August 31 in the Performing Arts Center. Mary will be speaking at the Code of Conduct meeting to MIHS athletes from all three athletics seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring) about her professional athletic career, the emotional and mental health successes and struggles of pursuing a professional athletic career, and her work in the professional world.

After her career in swimming Mary went on to a career in sports broadcasting with NBC and ESPN and corporate communications roles with Amazon, Microsoft, Edelman, Cisco and is now the principal with Summit Communications in Seattle.

Mary is a member of the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame, the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and the Pacific Northwest Swimming Hall of Fame.

Mary currently serves as the Vice Chair of the USA Swimming Foundation Board of Directors. A significant part of this role involves fundraising in support of the Foundation’s mission, which is working to strengthen the sport of swimming by Saving Lives, Building Champions and Impacting Communities. The USA Swimming Foundation aims to provide the opportunity for every person in the U.S. to learn to swim. The Foundation helps support swimming lessons for both children and adults and has given more than $17 million in grants to communities that need help in launching or sustaining swimming lesson programs.
