Prop. 2 – Renewing local, state-supplementing funding
UPDATE: The Mercer Island Community approved this levy measure in February 2014.
In October the Mercer Island School Board unanimously approved a maintenance and operations levy proposition to be put to voters on the February 11, 2014 election ballot. The four-year levy is a renewal levy for the one that was passed overwhelmingly by voters on Mercer Island in 2010.
The maintenance and operations levy is essential to maintaining the quality of Mercer Island schools. It funds 26 percent of the Mercer Island School District general fund for educational programs and services, including nearly 100 teachers and staff.
Because Washington state does not fully fund K-12 education, sustained local funding through the maintenance and operations levy is required in order to maintain the current level of educational programs in Mercer Island schools exceeding the levels funded by the state.
