What is a Grade Level Art Coordinator (GLAC)?
GLACs are the link to all art enrichment activity in your grade level. GLACs are responsible for the following:
Recruiting and training classroom Leads
Communicating with Supply person for supplies needed for all grade level projects and confirming supplies are available for projects
Coordinating project training for Leads and other classroom volunteers
Communicating with Leads monthly
Communicating with lead teachers about art curriculum
Ensuring sufficient copies of lessons available
What is a Lead?
Leads are the link to art enrichment in your classroom! Leads are responsible for the following:
Leading and/or delegating all art projects for your class (includes teaching each lesson, providing all supplies from Supply room, and cleaning up after the project is finished)
Coordinating lessons, dates and times with teacher and classroom volunteers
Entering lesson dates and times on the online calendar and kiln calendar
Ensuring supplies are available for lessons and communicating with Supply person as needed
Organizing supplies for projects and doing preparatory work as required by each lesson
Displaying art projects (or delegating to another volunteer)
Where/What are the Lessons?
Lessons are developed by art volunteers with key disciplines in mind:
Principles: line, color, shape, value
Media: clay, pens, pencils, paint, paper, tissue, etc.
History: exposure to artists and their styles
Lesson Location and Organization
· Each month’s lesson contains step-by-step instructions for doing the project. Lessons are organized by grade and month.
· A paper copy of the lessons is located in the art supply room.
· The powerpoint you will use to present it is online: go to the West Mercer webpage and click on “ PTA Art Docent Program.”
· There are multiple copies of each lesson. When you are finished, please put it back in the folder. If you pull the last copy, please make copies!
· These are large-scale posters that can be used in conjunction with art lessons. Now that lessons are presented digitally, many examples will already be included, but you may still want to have them on hand for students to look at.
· Located in the library conference room, available for checkout; make sure room not in use prior to entering
· Use checkout sheet on inside cupboard door
· Binder with print directory (entitled “Shorewood Collection”) available in library conference room and library shelf in Art Docent section

· located in the school library (in the “art docent” section), available as reference/resource to aid in teaching lessons. King County Library System is another fabulous resource.

The Kiln Room
· Clay projects- each grade does one clay project per year
· Clay glazes, tools, etc.
· See attached Kiln Guidelines or for more information, contact your GLAC or the kiln chair.
Teaching a Lesson
· Establish date and time for lesson with your teacher and your volunteers—make sure you have enough volunteers
· Enter lesson date and time on the online calendar
o It would be nice to also email your dates to the other leads
· 1/2 hour to set up; about 1-hour teaching (clean-up times vary)
· If you can, plan lesson to start after recess, so you can set up while the kids are out of the classroom
· Review lesson at least a week prior to teaching it
· The printed lesson plan will have additional notes with guidelines on what to say, questions to ask, practical hints such as how much paint to put in a dish, and plenty of background information
· Become familiar with the powerpoint so that you know which slides are hidden, which ones require multiple clicks, and since the paper version will probably be in black and white, what the full-color slide looks like
· Make sure supplies are available
· Locate resource materials (samples and prints)
· Do lesson at home with your kids! You will be much more prepared.
· Call for help on the art hotline—people have done these projects and are ready to help answer questions
· Solicit help, if needed, for pre-lesson prep work
· Art carts are available (may store supplies ready for next morning’s lesson, but don’t use cart for long time period)
· The supply closet is across from the main office. The key is hanging on inside wall next to Lynn Lawrence
· Email your lesson dates to the other Leads as soon as they are scheduled
· Please don’t take more than you need
· Please place items back where you found them—help keep things organized
· PLEASE—if you notice we are out of something, let your GLAC know
· The lessons are presented in small steps
· Always best to have samples to show the kids, and showing how to do it instead of just telling ALWAYS works better
· Show the kids the medium they are using (for example, with watercolors, you can demonstrate adding the right amount of water and do some painting so they can see what happens with too much/too little)
· Clarify with teacher what expectations are for kids who finish early (should they read, write in journal etc.?)
Things to keep in mind
· Have enough volunteers
· It is a good idea is to email the lesson PowerPoint so they will know what to expect- there will be slides that are hidden from students that are intended as background or additional support for the instructor and helpers
· Have extra materials (bound to be mistakes)
· Make extra materials (esp. in clay) for absent students
· Make sure there is drying space inside/outside classroom (you can use the art supply drying rack, but please RETURN THE NEXT DAY). Additional drying racks located in PTA Supply Room (labeled for Art Enrichment)
Lesson Completion/Hanging Artwork
· Clean up the workspace and replace leftover project supplies.
· If you have any helpful hints for other classes that haven’t done the project yet, contact the Leads.
· Hang art in the hallways or classroom:
o delegate to volunteer, if possible
o discuss with your teacher a location for hanging art (may use the same location all year, but need to check)
o use fire retardant paper for the background (big rolls in hallways)
o no stapling, taping or pinning directly on a wall (blue tape okay, but won’t hold well)
o don’t cover outlets (fire code)
o hanging supplies are in the supply room
· There are always opportunities to help with art projects:
o Pre-lesson prep
o Helping during lessons
o Hanging art in halls
o Leading a lesson
