Online Research Resources

  • We subscribe to the databases, eBooks, and digital encyclopedias linked below. They are available to and automatically logged in for students and staff at school. Access from outside Mercer Island High School requires a username and password. Find the list of usernames and passwords on the Library Schoology page in the Research Resources folder (or pick up a list at the library circulation desk when school is in person). These databases provide sources that rank very high in credibility, accuracy, and reliability for academic research. 


    Current Events, News, General Reference 

    EBSCO Host includes current general interest and specialized magazines, and also national and regional newspapers.  Full-text articles. 
    eLibrary contains over 2,500 full-text magazines, newspapers, books, and transcripts—plus over 7 million maps, photographs, infographics, educator-approved websites from Homework Central®, and top-quality multimedia (audio/video) clips.
    ProQuest Homework Central includes links to Culture Grams, eLibrary, History Study Center, ProQuest, ProQuest Learning: Literature, and SIRS Discoverer. Good one to bookmark for qucik reference links. 
    ProQuest Research Library includes more than 5,060 titles—over 3,600 in full text—from 1971 forward. It features a highly respected, diversified mix of scholarly journals, trade publications, magazines, and newspapers.
    World Book Online provides full-text access to this authoritative general encyclopedia, with links to related articles within the encyclopedia.

    Current and Controversial Issues

    Points of View offers a comprehensive introduction to, and analysis of, a wide variety of current issues with balanced coverage across the spectrum of opinion.
    Issues & Controversies is an online source of up-to-date, in-depth and objective information on the most prominent and hotly debated issues of the day.
    Pro/Con Online strives to provide impartial views of controversial issues. It consists of three separate publications—Congressional Digest, Supreme Court Debates, and International Debates—that explore societal issues nationally, on the Supreme Court, and internationally.

    SIRS Discoverer provides thousands of full-text articles on social, scientific, health, historic, business, economic, political and global issues. Articles are selected from 1500 newspapers, magazines, journals and government publications plus links to internet sites.

    History, Culture, & Literature

    CultureGrams offers a complete reference on world cultures. Each country’s report contains information on 25 categories, including history, language, greetings, gestures, family, housing, diet, economy, and more. All reports are written and reviewed by in-country experts.
    Gale eBooks is a substantial full-text reference eBook collection, covering multiple disciplines: History, Literature, Culture, Humanities, Health and Medicine, Science.  
    Gale in Context: US History is a searchable database that includes a variety of documents, materials, and sources pertaining to U.S. History. Also organized by topics, including decades.
    History Study Center, produced by ProQuest, offers valuable historical reference information that covers 14 centuries of history—from ancient to modern, old world to new world. History Study Center includes a comprehensive collection of primary and secondary source materials.
    History Reference Center, part of the EBSCOhost suite of databases, offers full text from more than 1,620 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books, cover to cover full text for more than 150 leading history periodicals, nearly 57,000 historical documents, more than 78,000 biographies of historical figures, more than 113,000 historical photos and maps, and more than 80 hours of historical video. 
    Literary Reference Center is a full-text database that combines information from major, respected reference works, books, literary journals as well as original content from EBSCO Publishing. Part of the EBSCOhost database collection.
    Proquest Learning: Literature delivers more than 180,000 searchable works of literature from medieval times to the present. Students can find author biographies, contemporary criticism, reviews, and multimedia resources organized into more than 3,000 Author Pages.

    Gale eBooks  is a substantial full-text reference eBook collection, covering multiple disciplines: Health and Medicine, Science, History, Literature, Culture, Humanities.  
    Health Source - Consumer Edition is part of the EBSCOhost suite of databases and is a rich collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide, providing information from nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. 
    Science Reference Center, part of the EBSCOhost package of databases, is a comprehensive research database that provides easy access to a multitude of full-text science-oriented content. This database contains full text for nearly 640 science encyclopedias, reference books, periodicals, etc. Topics covered include: biology, chemistry, earth & space science, environmental science, health & medicine, history of science, life science, physics, science & society, science as inquiry, scientists, technology and wildlife.
    Teen Health and and Wellness is a database of medical, disease, health, and well being information. It also includes current medical news and information on nutrition and social issues relevant to high school students.
    Today's Science gives a balanced, thorough understanding of the latest developments in the world of science. Full-text searching, comprehensive index and integrated glossary are provided. "Hot Topic" coverage with instant access includes biographies of prominent scientists past and present.

    Advanced Placement and Teacher Resources

    Advanced Placement Source is designed to meet the extensive needs of high school students enrolled in various AP courses. It offers a world of knowledge for students who seek to achieve academic excellence. Advanced Placement Source contains more than 5,550 full-text academic journals and magazines and over 502,000 photos, maps and flags.
    ERIC, the Education Resource Information Center, contains more than 1.3 million records and links to more than 323,000 full-text documents dating back to 1966.
    Professional Development Collection - Designed for professional educators, this database provides a highly specialized collection of nearly 520 high quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports. Professional Development Collection is the most comprehensive collection of full text education journals in the world.
