    Dear Northwood Families,

As we wrap up the calendar year, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Northwood school community for all the ways in which you have partnered with our educators to support your children.  Thank you for modeling and supporting resilience in your children, for supporting and connecting with teachers to find solutions to challenges, and for marshalling your energies as we all have learned to navigate this virtual school environment.  I’m grateful for our students who have also cultivated their own flexibility and resilience.  Of course, I am also thankful for the amazing, dedicated educators that I have the privilege of working alongside.  As a community, we have continued to work together to stay safe and healthy and to grow our hearts and minds.

In-Person Instruction and COVID-19 Safety Measures

In accordance with Public Health recommendations, one of the ways we can continue to work together is to limit our time in close proximity to others.  We are all anxious to get back together and move past this pandemic, but with continued high case rates in King County, it is not safe to gather in large groups.  As we plan for January’s expected return of Kindergarten on Wednesday, January 6th and the expected return of 1st grade on Tuesday, January 19th, please support these plans by continuing to practice social distancing, wearing masks, and adhering to public health and the governor’s recommendations.  We want to get students back in-person as soon as possible and the entire community has a role to play in containing and preventing COVID-19 cases.

Along with Kindergarten and 1st grade in-person instruction, we are also working on plans for hybrid in-person opportunities for 2-5 as well as small group support for students in need. We will continue to communicate directly with the families whose students are due to begin in person services and will provide updates as needed should plans change.

    Mindfulness and Character Trait Focus

Our Mindfulness and Character Trait instruction continues at Northwood. Each week students are given a mindfulness challenge to practice.  This month's challenges can be found on our Northwood website here.  For the month of December, we are reviewing with students the positive character traits we have learned about and practiced so far this year:  Resilience, Cooperation, and Gratitude.  Please consider ways you can continue the learning at home by discussing these traits, pointing them out when you see them in family and friends, and considering situations when practicing a given trait might be worthwhile.

Northwood PTA Turkey Drive - Thank you!

Thank you to the Northwood PTA and all the community members who contributed to the Turkey Drive in November.  Our PTA was able to donate a total of 50 turkeys to families in our area through the Friends of the Children organization.
