    Dear Northwood Families,

I hope this message finds you and your family healthy and well.  With the transition into the autumn season and the change in the clocks, we also move into a very busy school season.  This month’s calendar is always a bit wonky due to holidays, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.  As much as we are able, maintaining the school rhythm and routine we have built over the last few months can support our learners (and ourselves) in feeling successful during this busy time of year.

    This message contains the following:

    • Conferences
    • Character Traits and Mindfulness
    • NW PTA Turkey Drive
    • Health Attestations
    • Upcoming Events

    Conferences

We believe that the connection between school and home is vital for the success of students. One of the important ways that we nurture this connection is through annual Parent-Teacher Conferences. These conferences are seen as so important that we interrupt school to provide 3 days for the conferences (November 23, November 24, and November 25, this year). These 3 days are work days for teachers, and if they will not be here conferring with families during this time they must take them off as personal leave.  Although school has looked different in many ways this year due to COVID-19, it is our goal for these conferences to remain a meaningful opportunity to connect.

Teachers have been reaching out to families to coordinate conference schedules.  If you haven’t already heard from your teacher, you can expect to hear from them shortly about scheduling a time to confer.  The conference dates are just around the corner, and our teachers look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s growth and learning. Thank you for working with us for the success of our students!

    Character Traits and Mindfulness

Mindfulness learning and practice continues for our Northwood students.  Our team of Mindful Leaders are creating weekly video lessons to support our students’ developing mindful practice.  Additionally, during the morning meeting, teachers lead their students in a school-wide mindful minute.  Cultivating mindfulness and mindfulness strategies can help students be present, improve focus, improve emotional awareness, improve emotional self-regulation, and learn tools to help them respond (rather than react) in challenging situations.  This month's mindful challenges can be found on the Northwood Mindfulness webpage here.

    Monthly Focus Character Trait:
Our focus character trait for NOVEMBER is Gratitude. Gratitude is a feeling of thankfulness. When we feel or express gratitude, we often find we feel happier and more content.  Our call to action for students: this month, think about the people, experiences, and things that you have in your life that make you feel grateful. Let people know you are grateful for them.  Say “thank you” to others who support you, share their toys or games with you, make your lunch, invite you to join in on a game, help you with schoolwork….

    Northwood PTA Turkey Drive

The Northwood PTA is facilitating a Turkey Drive to occur at Northwood Elementary on Wednesday, November 18 from 10:00am-12:00pm in the bus loop.  If you are interested in participating in this philanthropy event benefiting the Friends of the Children, please see the PTA website for more information:  https://northwoodowlspta.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/131647

    Health Attestations

As part of our health and safety response to COVID-19, anyone who comes into Northwood is required to complete a Health Attestation.  Student and staff health attestations are found on Skyward and must be completed before students come to the building for assessments, appointments, instruction, or any other reason.  Parents or community members who come to Northwood by appointment to meet with staff in person are also required to complete a visitor health attestation.  The link for this visitor attestation can be found posted on the front door and can be accessed via url or QR code.  If you have any questions or have difficulty completing the health attestation, please contact our main office at 206-275-5800 or email sarah.peshkin@mercerislandschools.org or laura.bowers@mercerislandschools.org .  For more information about our health and safety measures, please see our MISD COVID-19 Response Plan .
