We have had a great year with Parent Playground so far! Students LOVE seeing their parents and other family members during a lunch and recess time. The feedback that we are hearing from parents and from staff is that it is going well and creating both a sense of excitement and pride in our students when their worlds come together.
We started this Family Engagement Activity last year to increase the participation of male role models on our campus, as research indicates that elementary students benefit from this type of relationship. While we welcome any/all parents to attend, our ultimate goal is to increase the male presence and so far, it has been such a joy to see so many dads on campus, eating lunch and playing a game at recess. We have also noticed that it has allowed some dads to establish a connection with other dads, as they wait their turn in a Handball Game or are standing in line waiting for the opportunity to play the basketball-based game called “Bump!”. We are excited to offer Parent Playground through the end of the year (check the school’s website for details) and to continue this program again next year. Thank you to those parents/dads who have already joined us and, if you haven’t yet had a chance, come on out! We have room for everybody and would love to see you. Parent Playground Page
Lost and Found
Our Northwood Lost and Found bins are overflowing with jackets, sweaters, water bottles, and lunch items dropped and forgotten by students. Come take a look and see if any of these items belong to your child(ren). Remaining Lost and Found items will be donated on Friday, April 5!
Smarter Balanced Assessment Information
Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students have begun the annual state testing called the Smarter Balanced Assessment. At these grade levels, students take the English Language Arts and Mathematics Assessments. In 5th grade, students also take a Science Assessment. All testing is done online, and we use the data as a district and school to both monitor individual student growth and learning and system-wide student growth goals. To learn more about these state tests, please see the OSPI Assessment/Testing webpage.
Northwood PTA General Membership Meeting
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the upcoming Northwood PTA meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, April 17 at 7:00pm. The Northwood PTA will be voting in the new/future PTA Board Members and will also have a Volunteer Fair prior to the start of the meeting. Superintendent Donna Colosky will be a special guest speaker, sharing and seeking parent input on the School Board of Directors’ recent work on revised District Mission, Vision, and Core Values. We hope to see you there!
Kindergarten Enrollment for 2019-20
We are already in the planning stages for the 2019-20 school year, and we need your help. Do you have a child who will be starting Kindergarten in the fall? Does your neighbor? Do your friends? Please register your child and/or encourage others to register their children for Kindergarten as soon as possible. The more we know about our incoming class of students, the better able we are to plan for staff and classrooms to welcome them. Registration is online at: Kindergarten Registration 2019-20
