Global Reading Challenge
Many of our 4th and 5th grade students have taken on the Global Reading Challenge, a reading challenge and incentive program in partnership with the King County Library System. Through this enriching program, students read six selected books and take quizzes to show what they know about each of the texts they have read. They meet weekly during a lunch time, and they practice writing and responding to thoughtful questions about each book. Our student participation has grown each year, and Mrs. Harnish, our Librarian-Teacher, is thrilled with our participation this year. We look forward to the school competition later this year.
Guest Author Visits - 2nd-5th Grades
Our Northwood 2nd -5th grade students will get a visit from Suzanne Selfors, an author of popular books such as the Imaginary Veterinary Pet series, this Thursday, January 10. Some of you ordered books for her to sign, and you may also send in a book for signing on this day. Many thanks to the Mercer Island Schools Foundation for funding this exciting enrichment event!
Additionally, on January 24, we are excited to welcome to Northwood Mr. John Schu, a Scholastic Books Ambassador of School Libraries. His mission is to inspire kids to read and connect with books, and he will provide exciting presentations for our 2nd-5th grade learners. As part of his visit, there will be a pop-up book fair -- a complement to our longer Scholastic Book Fair to occur at the end of February. The PTA is gathering volunteers to support this pop-up fair during the school day and after school until 6:00pm. Please see the PTA website to volunteer.
We are excited to provide our students with connections to both of these leaders in literacy, books, and learning.
5th Grade Orchestra & Band Curriculum Nights
Our 5th grade instrumental musicians will be showing off what they have learned this year with their upcoming Band and Orchestra Curriculum Nights. The events are as follows:
- Orchestra 5th Grade Curriculum Night is on January 22, 2019 at IMS at 5:30 p.m.
- Band 5th Grade Curriculum Night is on January 24, 2019 at IMS at 6:30 p.m.
Kindergarten Orientation for 2019-2020 School Year
Do you have a rising Kindergartener? If so, it is time to start thinking about the start of Kindergarten in the fall of 2019. We welcome parents of any incoming Kindergarten students to a Kindergarten orientation/information event on Monday, January 29, 2019 @ 6:00pm in the Northwood Commons. We will provide an overview of what to expect in Kindergarten, as well as some information about the registration process for Kindergarten. The Mercer Island School District registration process is online, and the system will be open for Kindergarten registration beginning Tuesday, January 29, 2019.
Please register your child for Kindergarten at your earliest convenience; the more we know about our incoming students, the better able we are to meet their needs through hiring qualified staff.
If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact our Registrar, Rachel Hood, in the Northwood office at 206-275-5800 or at rachel.hood@
