August / September 2018Posted by Joby McGowan on 11/10/2018
Dear Lakeridge Students and Families,
On behalf of Lakeridge staff, I am excited to welcome you all to the 2018-2019 school year! I hope you’ve enjoyed your summer and are as excited as I am to get the new year started! The beginning of each school year brings great excitement, new adventures and endless possibilities.
All of us are looking forward to welcoming back returning students and greeting our new friends. Our skilled front office staff has been registering new families and getting us ready to hit the ground running for 2018-2019. Our hardworking, dedicated custodial and maintenance staff have the building and grounds looking clean, safe and beautiful. Teachers and staff are planning, preparing and enthusiastically anticipating the new school year and the return of kids to their classrooms. Our awesome PTA has been hard at work this summer and they’re ready for a busy and exciting year of continuing their world-class support of Lakeridge school community and kids! Together, WE are all looking forward to seeing YOU on the First Day of School!
***Note: Grades 1-5 start on Wed., September 5th and Kindergarten starts on Fri., September 7th (half day AM) ***
Also, please make a special note of our Lakeridge Back-to-School Welcome Coffee on Wednesday, September 5th starting at 9:15am in the gym. This is a grand event with table after table of information and opportunities to connect, get involved, and learn more about our awesome school, district and community. This event is open to Kindy families too! Even though Kindergarten does start until the 7th, I’d really encourage families to attend this event. We’re also offering two special scaled-down targeted events for Kindergarten families and families who are new to Lakeridge. Our “Kindy Koffee” is at 9:30 am on September 7th in the Library and will be tailored to Kindergarten information. Our “New Family Coffee” is at 9:30 am on September 13th, also at 9:30 am in the Library.
Again, I want to welcome back all of our returning kids and families and extend an especially warm welcome to our new Lakeridge families. It’s going to be a great year!

NEW KISS-N-GO AFTERNOON FLAGGER: We’re excited to introduce a new flagger position to help with traffic flow for our Kiss-N-Go lanes at dismissal. New this year, you will see one of our new paraeducators and new signage (stop sign and sandwich board sign) flagging cars to line up in the parking lot of the South Mercer Playfields (Rainbow Park) and then helping to direct the flow of traffic to our student pick up lane in the afternoons.
STUDENT DROP OFF (AM) & PICK UP (PM): We need your help! Please remember that there is no student drop-off in the morning or pick-up in the afternoon past the Kiss-N-Go loop. We’re working to improve our signage and supervision, but we need your help and cooperation. Please help us get the word out so we can all work together as a Lakeridge community for efficient school operations that ensure every student and adult can arrive and leave safely!
STUDENT ARRIVALS: Please note that our playground is closed at 8:45-9:15am and 3:45-4:00pm. We do not provide playground supervision on our playground before or after school.
STUDENT CLASS PLACEMENT
A great deal of time, effort and thought goes into the process of placing students in new classes for the new school year. Many factors are considered in this process including staff input, family input, student learning and social-emotional needs, mix of students placed together in a class, enrollment, and more! I’m always impressed by how much individual student care, concern and hard work goes into this process of balancing classrooms to be equitable, balanced, healthy and happy for all 460+ children.
Let me share with you a glimpse into how we place students into classes. The class placement process here at LR is truly something to be celebrated. We spend most of May and the first bit of June working on the upcoming year’s class lists. The classroom teachers discuss every student individually and deeply consider all the student dynamics of the new class. The specialist teachers (e.g. Music, PE, etc.), our school counselor, playground supervisors, special education and learning support staff, administration and more are also heavily involved with the process. Additionally, we collect parent input that is given close and careful consideration. Across all MISD elementary schools, the opportunity for parents to give input to this process is via the "Special Considerations for Student Placement" form - a link that is open to all families around the first two weeks of May. After nearly six weeks of investment in this process for every child, our class lists are finalized before the end of the student school year (mid-June) and aren't reopened except to place new incoming students.
In advance of the start of the new school year, I want to thank you for encouraging your child(ren) to be positive and excited for the new year. Focusing on the positive with your student and helping him/her see the bright side of the exciting opportunities that a new year brings shows kids that there’s always a silver lining if we choose to see it that way. Not getting to be in class with a best friend can be reframed as an opportunity to make new friends and still get to see the best friend at common times like recesses. Win-win! Explain to nervous kids that it is okay and perfectly normal to sometimes take a while to acclimate to new schools, new classmates, new teachers, new learning environments, and/or new schedules and it also builds perseverance, adaptability and self-esteem. Chances are that it’ll be wonderful if given a chance! The conversations and encouragement students receive at home can make a world of difference in starting the year positively. Likewise, we’ll be similarly doing everything we can here at school to ensure that every Lakeridge Lion feels welcome and happy too. Together, we’ll all have an excellent 2018-2019 school year!
HIP HIP HOORAY for Lakeridge PTA!!! Please consider joining our Lakeridge PTA. PTA participation is an essential way to get connected with other families and is vital to our school success. Make sure to visit our PTA website (or link from LR’s home page), visit with PTA leadership at any of our back-to-school events, or just call the front office for connection information.
PTA, PARENT INVOLVEMENT, & VOLUNTEERING
Parent and community support is a highly valued, essential and greatly appreciated component to the success of students in our Mercer Island Schools. At Lakeridge and across the district, we invite everyone to join our school community and we welcome volunteers. We hope to partner with all of you through many volunteering opportunities including supporting classrooms, attending and/or volunteering at PTA-sponsored events, chaperoning field trips, and more. To learn more about being a volunteer, please go to https://www.mercerislandschools.org/Domain/1622 for more information!
