October 2018 Parent Newsletter
Hello Islander Parents – School is off and running and students are starting to settle in. We currently have 1,560 students enrolled at MIHS. Our biggest class is the Freshman class. I just wanted to alert you to the following:
School Messenger: The District is now using School Messenger to enhance our phone/email/text notifications to be sent to families. You have already received emails and a welcome phone call from Superintendent Donna Colosky using the new system. But to opt in for texting, we are required to ask our families to enter your cell phone number(s) to be used for texts in Skyward’s Family Access. The District and individual schools will use texts for important information about events, school closings or delays and safety alerts. SchoolMessenger is compliant with the Student Privacy Pledge, so you can rest assured that your information is safe and will never be given or sold to anyone.
New School Schedule: Thank you for adjusting to the new school bell schedule. We are now in compliance with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI - state dept. education). Some students were asking about the 5 minutes of “connection” time at the end of the day. School ends at 3:05 PM but students are released from class at 3:00 so they have 5 minutes at the end of the day to connect with their individual teachers/staff if they need to. If they don’t need to meet with individual staff members students will have time to get to their buses in the afternoon.
New Attendance Rules: Consistent attendance to class is important. It is a focus this year for our school. In the past year we received new legislation governing our attendance policies and procedures. We are still working on how the new legislation will play out in our district. Once we have new procedures in place we will let you know. Most importantly, we are hopeful that students minimize their absences from classes. If possible, we ask students to schedule their doctor appointments and any other appointments to be done after school or during a student’s off period. We also respectfully ask that if you are planning vacations to minimize the time students are taken out of school. It really makes a difference in helping your student to be successful in classes.
October Testing: The month of October will be a busy time for assessments and surveys for our staff and students. Parents/guardians will receive notification via emails, letters home and postings on our website for further details and information. Here are some important dates to note:
October 10th - PSAT for all 11th grade students
October 17th - Healthy Youth Survey for all 10th and 12th grade students
October 22nd, 24th and 25th - SBA makeups for 12th grade students
October 23rd - PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) for 52 randomly selected 10th and 11th grade students
PTSA Thank You: To get school up and running it takes a lot of people to help our students get what they need to start school. We had a very successful Fees & Photos days because PTSA volunteers made it all happen. Also, kudos to the PTSA members for helping to sponsor a dinner for our staff on Curriculum Night recently. This too is greatly appreciated. I am ever so lucky to have the parent volunteer help we have at MIHS. Thank YOU! You make a difference.
Thank you for all that you are doing to get your student to school every morning and helping them to have the supplies they need for school. It matters.
