Mercer Island High School Orchestra Wins Top 2 Awards at Vancouver, Canada Festival
The Mercer Island High School Orchestra traveled to Vancouver, Canada over Memorial Weekend to compete in the WorldStrides’ Heritage Festival and participate in orchestra clinics on-site as well at Western Washington University's Music Department. The orchestra students came home two of the top awards, plus an award for an individual student.
37 members of the Mercer Island High School Orchestra and winds from the Band participated in the Orchestra program’s annual performance tour, this year to Vancouver. Mrs. Vicki White Miltun, director of the MISD Orchestra Program, points out that performance road trips are a mainstay of performers’ lives and students gain valuable experience in playing in different venues for new audiences. The Orchestra also gave an afternoon performance at a local retirement home.
The traveling Orchestra won two awards: Gold-First Place for a full orchestra in its school division and one of only 4 Adjudicator’s Awards, singling the orchestra out for tonality and interpretation. Additionally, Nathan Wacker, bass player and graduating senior, won the (only) Ovation Award for his dedication to his music, school and community.
The Orchestra performed Afternoon in Montreal by Paul Creston, and Hungarian Dance No. 1 in D Minor by Brahms.
MIHS Principal Vicki Puckett, a chaperone on the trip, agreed that it was an amazing trip with amazing kids. Vicki White Miltun had nothing but admiration for the students from freshman to senior who coalesced into a singular orchestra producing an amazing performance.
