Accelerated Math Testing Information


  • Mercer Island School District does not provide practice materials or guidance on any program assessments. The intention of these assessments is to properly place students. We encourage students to try their best on each assessment so that we may find the appropriate class placement. Contact Jamie Prescott, Director of Learning Services

    What is my child's math trajectory?

    Please refer to the appropriate descriptor (below) for more information about upcoming Accelerated Math Testing. You may also find the Accelerated Math Information page and the district's Math Placement Guidelines policy helpful as references.


    5th Grade Students


    5th-grade general math students: Students will automatically move into 6th-grade general math unless you believe your child is able to accelerate.

    • Single accelerate to 6th grade accelerated math (7th grade standards)
    • Double accelerate to 6th-grade pre-algebra (8th grade standards)
    • Visit the Accelerated Math Information page to register for Smarter Balanced scores to be considered for acceleration. Depending on the results of this assessment, students may be asked to take an achievement test to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the math targets.

    Highly Capable Students/Accelerated Math Students: No need to nominate unless you wish to double accelerate; students in this program will move into 6th grade accelerated math.

    • For Double Acceleration: Visit the Accelerated Math Information page to register for Smarter Balanced scores to be considered for acceleration.  Depending on the results of this assessment, students may also be asked to take an achievement test to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the math targets.


    6th Grade Students


    6th-grade general math students: Students will automatically move into 7th-grade general level math unless you believe your child is able to accelerate.     7th Grade Students


    7th-grade general math students: Student will move into general 8th-grade math the following year do not need to take the ITBS. Depending on the results of this assessment, students may also be asked to take an achievement test to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the math targets.

    7th grade accelerated math students: Students currently in accelerated math will simply move into Algebra 1 without further assessment.
