Update - Fall 2013
The District Different Learners Review Committee prioritized the following recommendations for 2013-2014:
- Selection and implementation of K-8 screening and identification tool in the area of reading.
- K-2 Focus on reading curriculum, mapping, revising to meet CCSS, professional development.
- Small group, targeted professional development
Following is a summary of the status of each of the three recommendations.
Selection and Implementation of K-8 screening and identification tool
The district investigated numerous screening tools available for K-8 students in reading and narrowed the list to six viable options. Further investigation including speaking with researchers, screening tool reps, other districts utilizing the tools and our own in-house expertise, resulted in the selection of AIMSweb. More information about AIMSweb is available here: http://www.aimsweb.com/ AIMSweb was selected because of its K-8 span, the ability of multiple measures, additional screening assessments K-2, alignment to the Common Core, ease of use and easy access to testing and data online. Because AIMSweb is online, the license was purchased with technology funds.
All K-6 student have been screened with the fall benchmark assessment. All K-5 students will be screened three times during the school year.
For grade 7-8, the tool has been and will be used to screen new to IMS 7th and 8th graders, and all students who are at risk (did not pass state reading exams, previous concerns about reading, teacher identified students, etc).
Teacher training to support the implementation of the AIMSweb tool was initially intensive and is now ongoing as needs arise.
K-2 Focus on reading curriculum, mapping, revising to meet CCSS, professional development
The review of the K-2 literacy program has begun. This review includes determining existing curriculum and practices, researching best practice, determining gaps in curriculum to meet the new English Language Arts Common Core State Standards, and selection of new materials as appropriate. The committee has met several times.
Small group, targeted professional development
This professional development initiative will be ongoing the entire school year. Summer workshops on Reading and Writing were attended by about 65 staff members. Training was provided during the teacher preservice/LID days regarding ways to support different learners. Additional professional development opportunities have been happening this fall including such topics as a presentation to the HS regarding Autism.
Plans are just now being developed for additional targeted professional development.
