    Certification Standards

    The 2019 legislative session finalized and approved paraeducator training and certification standards.  In the 2019-2020 school year, all Washington districts will be providing 14 hours of the 28 hours required for the "Fundamental Course of Study".  All paras, regardless of tenure and possessing teacher certification, are required by the new law to complete the Fundamental Course of Study.  


    Training Overview

    For the 2019-2020 school year, paraeducators will receive 7 hours of in-person training and do 7 hours of online training. The online training is done through the state's paraeducator online program titled Paraeducators: What We Do Matters.  The online training will be done over two years in a specific order.  

    ONLINE Training

    Here are the target dates for completion for the online modules during 19-20 School Year:

    Module 1 - October 31, 2019
    Module 7 - November 30, 2019
    Module 9 - December 31, 2019
    Module 2 - January 31, 2020
    Module 4 - February 28, 2020
    Module 5 - March 30, 2020
    Module 8 - April 30, 2020
    These target dates are meant to keep you on pace, the final date for completion of all modules listed above is June 30, 2020.

    LIVE training

    All paraeducators in the district must plan to attend the two LIVE training sessions listed below:

    October 11, 2019- Kick Off Session:    Introduction to the paraeducator Fundamental Course of Study and Certifications.  Paraeducators will receive training on technology basics (PDenroller and eCert systems). Session to begin at 1:00pm at Mercer Island High School.

    January 27, 2020 (elementary and IMS paras) -  Fundamentals I & III.  There will be two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Location and times to be communicated. 


    March 20, 2020 (high school paras and make up for elementary and IMS paras)


    Q:   Will I be paid for this training time?

    Yes, paraeducators will submit timecards to be paid for this time.  The state has budgeted for 14 hours in 2019/20 per paraeducator.  Please only do training during the work week, not on the weekends.

    Q:   Is this training in addition to our optional training & technology training hours? 

    Yes, these training hours are in addition. You may use optional training hours for the online training modules if you wish to do more than the modules outlined above. 

    • All paras will need to complete all 12 modules by the end of the 20/21 school year, June 30, 2021.

    Q:   What happens if I miss the in-person training?

    The district will provide make up opportunities for the in-person training.
