King County Green School Program Information

King County Solid Waste Division’s Green Schools Program was established to provide King County schools and school districts with tools and support needed to

•initiate and expand waste reduction and recycling practices and other conservation actions.

•involve the whole school community in environmental stewardship.

•operate environmentally efficient and responsible facilities.

The program is sponsored by King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, Solid Waste Division and all public and private K - 12 schools and school districts in King County, outside of the City of Seattle, are eligible to participate.

Lakeridge Elementary School has been recognized by King County as a Sustaining Green School for maintaining strong conservation practices. Lakeridge had previously been named as a Level 3 Green School by King County and has since completed an additional conservation practices from the program's best practices guides to achieve this new distinction.

Lakeridge was also honored by the state in 2016 with the Washington State Green School Leader Award by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The award recognizes schools in Washington state whose practices reduce waste and protect the environment for its excellence in Pillar 1, reducing environmental impact and costs.

Our school’s achievements in the areas of waste reduction and recycling include:

•       Lakeridge increased its recycling rate in the lunchroom from zero to 75 percent by recycling plastic bottles, aluminum cans, juice boxes, milk cartons, etc. Lakeridge also began lunchroom collection of all food scraps, which are collected each week by Cedar Grove Composting.

•       Thanks to these efforts, Lakeridge’s lunchroom went from 700 pounds of trash per week to 85 pounds of trash per week.

•       The composting program is run by students (3rd through 5th grades) who monitor the bins when students line up to throw out their scraps at the end of lunch.

•       Fourth and fifth grade students from the Recycling Club actively help with recycling efforts throughout the school.

•       A waste-free lunch initiative was started by educating the students and their families about choosing reusable containers and buying in bulk to reduce packaging waste.

•       The Zero Waste Team placed recycling stickers that list what can and can’t be recycled on classroom and lunchroom recycling containers.        

•       The Lakeridge Learning Garden has areas for each grade level to plant and maintain.

•       The school’s Healthy Ways to School Program works to lessen carbon footprints by encouraging students and their families to walk, bike, carpool or take the bus to school once each week.

•       The entire student body was educated by the King County “Our Planet, R Choices” assembly.  The Earth Club members attended 3 workshops on Recycling/Reduction, Worm Bins, and Environmental Leadership.

•       Rapid Refill is buying back empty printer cartridges.

•       We now have a Green Party Suggestion list for the countless number of class parties that our children’s classes have.  This includes waste reduction tips for the paper goods, and healthier food offerings suggestions.

•       Lakeridge held on E-cycling event, collecting old cell phones, computers, small electronics, etc. for safe recycling.

Lakeridge has qualified for the Green Schools’ LEVEL II Energy Conservation designation.

Lakeridge Elementary School completed its Level II Energy Conservation check- list.   The district had received a grant from PSE for a license to use software to help us analyze our energy usage. Thanks to parent and MISD District Green Team member, Mark Li, the energy conservation analysis was accomplished. PSE provides monthly data reports for the gas and electrical meters on our campuses. Due to the work by the district maintenance staff, teachers and students, the district as a whole is using less energy. Specifically, for the 12 month period ending November 2010, the district used 4.2% less energy (31,522 MBTU) than the prior 12 month period. If you compare usage of last year to 2 years prior, there has been a 11.7% reduction. At Lakeridge, we have seen a general trend to lower usage. However we did have a spike in gas usage during the 2009 winter which increased our usage to 68kBtu/ft2. It is difficult to compare usage at the different schools directly, due to differing equipment and usage patterns. District wide we average 63 kBtu/ft2, with a high of 70kBtu/ft2 (MiHS) and a low of 50kBtu/ft2 (IMS) We will continue to monitor our usage and look for ways to reduce our consumption. Two months ago at Lakeridge, the district enabled sensors in each classroom to automatically turn off the lights when the room is empty. The sensors work on both movement and sound and will definitely have an impact on our energy usage.

Both Lakeridge parents and staff/faculty have been notified about these and many other energy conservation efforts through the school newspaper and via electronic memos. We have published the monetary cost of our energy usage and have published tips for reducing our energy consumption (both for the home and the school) on our PTA school website. Additionally:

·       For the week surrounding the upcoming Earth Day in April, students will read a “Tip of the Day” on how to save energy.  

·       The school’s vending machine’s display lights have been turned permanently off.

·       Incandescent light have been replaced with fluorescent bulbs/tubes throughout the school.

·       “No idle” signs were posted near the car drop off/pick up area.

·       Our Healthy Ways To School Committee organized a “Passport Program” for the third year in a row, encouraging all students to walk, bike or take the bus rather than be driven in a car.

These tips were sent out to all Lakeridge Staff & Faculty.

These efforts and communications have inspired great conversations from our custodian to parents, Green Team Leaders, faculty and Principal! The theme has definitely become, “Together We Can Save Energy!”
