Every new teacher in the Mercer Island School District receives a mentor for their first year. The district staff work with the principals to select teachers who will provide support in curriculum, instruction, and the day-to-day operation of the school. As much as possible new teachers are matched with mentors in their school and grade/department. All new teachers will be enrolled into a clock hours course titled "New Teacher Induction". As a part of this course new teachers will meet with mentors, discuss relevant issues with colleagues, reflect upon observations made by their mentors and discuss journal articles. Mentors will also be enrolled in a clock hours course titled "Mentor Training and Beginning Teacher Support". All teachers who have a residency certificate in Washington State have to either get the state Professional Certification or National Board Teacher Certification.
