New Teacher Mentoring Program

Every new teacher in the Mercer Island School District receives a mentor for their first year. The district staff work with the principals to select teachers who will provide support in curriculum, instruction, and the day-to-day operation of the school. As much as possible new teachers are matched with mentors in their school and grade/department. The expectations for teachers and mentors working together are found here: Mentor Responsibilities document

All new teachers will be enrolled into a clock hours course titled "New Teacher Induction". As a part of this course new teachers will meet with mentors, discuss relevant issues with colleagues, reflect upon observations made by their mentors and discuss journal articles. Mentors will also be enrolled in a clock hours course titled "Mentor Training and Beginning Teacher Support". This website is designed to provide new teachers and their mentors with information and resources to support the critical first years of teaching.

Teacher Certification

All teachers who have a residency certificate in Washington State have to either get the state Professional Certification or National Board Teacher Certification.

New Teacher Online Resources - This website was put together by teachers in Oswego, NY. It has a comprehensive set of links to many useful sites.

Tips for Middle School - This site is aimed at middle school teachers but has lots of links of use for teachers at any level.

Discipline - This website, which, though they are mainly selling stuff, also has a free site with tips on how to handle discipline problems.

Behavior Issues - This website has tips on how to work with certain types of kids and classroom behavior. It might be worth checking out. Click on the title of each section for more detail.

National Education Association Teacher Toolkit: Classroom Management - This site also has links to related topics and articles by NEA.

New! New Teacher is a site run by Harry and Rosemary Wong, the authors of many books and articles for new teachers including “The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher.” This site is free and non-commercial.
